Sony Vegas is a great editing utility that doesn't cost much (about $80). The interface is intuitive and easy to use and the program can really grow with you as you go from light editing to major productions. I always recommend it to people who want to take the next step up from windows moviemaker. I've used top notch pro-editors like Final Cut Pro and Premiere, and they're great but they're expensive. Vegas is cheap but it hangs with the big boys, plus there's a lot of online support. Take a look at it at:

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 Is very easy to use and a lot of schools use it.
